“Just Take the Leap!” – How Anika Went From International Student to Student Ambassador

For many international students, the factors which influence their choice of destination aren’t just those related to education. Things like people, weather, and culture can also be pull factors. This was the case for Anika Kalalo, who was not only drawn to the exciting and growing institution of Griffith University, but also to the sunny and relaxed beachside vibes of the Gold Coast. It was on this little glitter strip of Southeast Queensland that Anika began studying her Master of Business, and also where she became one of the 2024 Student Ambassadors to the Gold Coast Mayor. As part of our ongoing series, Student Success Stories, we spoke with Anika about her exciting journey from Manila to mayoral student ambassador.

Hi Anika. How did your journey from the Philippines to Australia begin?

It all started with a desire to study abroad. I've had a few years of work experience back home (Manila, Philippines) but I just knew that I wanted more in terms of learning and growth which is why I considered studying and living abroad. Initially, I was contemplating whether to choose Canada or Australia, but in the end, I just followed where my heart desired to go!

Prior to starting your international education journey, were you familiar with IDP? If not, how did you find out about us?

Before planning my journey to Australia, some friends recommended IDP to me. Their experiences had been successful (though in a different country: Canada), so it wasn’t hard for me to trust their recommendation given the positive outcomes. I wasn't really aware of IDP's existence before that.

Growing up in Manila, were you always interested in travelling overseas and exploring other parts of the world?

Yes, definitely. Traveling has always been an interest of mine. Just the idea of exploring new places and experiencing different cultures was something that excited me. I also felt like I needed to travel to see what was out there beyond what I knew.

What was it about Australia, and the Gold Coast that made you want to come and study here?

After a lot of research and even creating a spreadsheet to compare the pros and cons of Canada and Australia, I finally chose Australia, specifically the Gold Coast. The reasons were pretty clear to me. First, I found a good, reputable university—Griffith—that offered the exact degree I wanted: a Master of Business, majoring in Human Resources. Plus, the Gold Coast campus looked absolutely beautiful in the pictures I saw online! Second, being from the Philippines, a tropical country with stunning beaches, I knew I wanted to live somewhere with similar sunny weather, and the Gold Coast felt just right. Lastly, I noticed that there were many international students on the Gold Coast, which made me feel like I wouldn’t be alone and could find the support I needed to adjust to a new place.

What surprised you most about Australia when you first arrived?

When I first arrived in Australia, I was really surprised by how warm and welcoming everyone was. I had my ideas about what people might be like, but the reality was even better. Everyone was genuinely friendly and approachable. What really caught me off guard was how much small talk happened everywhere! I was amazed that even strangers would smile and ask how I was doing while I was just walking around the neighborhood. I feel like the people really helped me settle in much faster than I expected.

How did IDP counsellors help you settle in to your new life on the Gold Coast?

I asked Tim and Pau, my IDP counselors, a ton of questions, and they were really patient with me throughout the process. They suggested attending some of IDP's offered seminars that would help me with my preparation as well. Most of our conversations happened before I arrived on the Gold Coast though, so I didn’t get the chance to catch up/connect with them once I was here.

Why did you ultimately choose Griffith University as your preferred destination?

Besides offering the degree I wanted, Griffith University was also one of the top universities on the Gold Coast. What really drew me in, though, was their strong engagement with international students. Even before I arrived, I was following them on Instagram and noticed how actively they shared information about programs and activities for international students. This was really appealing to me since I would want to feel supported by my university when I am a thousand miles away from home.

Why did you choose to study a Master of Business, with a major in Human Resources?

I decided to study a Master of Business with a focus on Human Resources to advance my career. I already have a few years of experience in HR, particularly in Learning and Development, and I wanted to build on that by learning more about the field. Also, I’ve always found business topics interesting! I’m excited to use the knowledge and skills I gain to further my career and make a bigger impact in my work.

Tell us about your weekends. What do you like doing in your spare time in Australia?

During the weekend (if I have the time and I am not busy with uni or work), I balance my "me" time and time with friends. I would usually go out for a morning walk and then have brunch with my friends. I love trying new cafes and restaurants around the Gold Coast! As for my "me time", I honestly really like to take things slowly during weekends. I would just go to the beach and watch the waves or hang out in parks since it helps me relax. Watching the sunset is probably one of most favourite things, especially with the stunning Gold Coast sunsets!

You recently became one of the Gold Coast Mayor’s Student Ambassadors, which is fantastic! What inspired you to undertake this challenging, but rewarding program?

Since moving to the Gold Coast, I’ve been trying to keep an open mindset and say yes to all opportunities that I know would help me grow, even if they come with a bit of fear. When I heard about the 2024 MSA program, especially from a friend who was a 2023 ambassador, I was immediately hooked! Even though I had a few doubts at first, I knew that joining the program could open doors to amazing experiences, connections, and growth—and I wasn't wrong. I am enjoying every minute of it!

What are you hoping to gain from your experience as a Student Ambassador?

Besides the unique experiences, I'm looking forward to both professional and personal growth. I want to make more connections with people from different industries that could help my future career. I'm also excited to build lasting friendships with fellow MSAs, where we can support each other to grow. Personally, I want to gain more confidence and step out of my comfort zone and have fun along the way!

So far, what’s been your favourite part of studying in Australia and on the Gold Coast?

My favourite part of studying in Australia, especially on the Gold Coast, has been meeting people from all over the world. It's amazing how, despite our different backgrounds, we find common ground and build real connections. I also love how living here pushes me to enjoy life even with a busy schedule. Being surrounded by nature reminds me to slow down and take a moment to breathe.

What’s some advice you would give to other prospective international students who aren’t sure how or where to start their overseas study journeys?

My advice is simple: just take the leap! It's normal to have doubts and fears, but based on my experience, those decisions often lead to the best outcomes. Don’t hesitate to ask a lot of questions, reach out to people who’ve been through it, and stay curious. You can never know enough! Planning and researching a lot really helped ease my anxiety about studying and living here. And don't be afraid to seek help from experts like IDP—they know best how to guide you through the process. So, trust yourself, be prepared, and go for it!
